Staff Sleepers: Chinstrap Ninja writers share their favorite 2010 tight end value players

There is little more gratifying in the world of sports than to be able to tell your friend, or (better yet), that cocky guy at the office water cooler, four little words that can sting so well: “I told you so.”

Wouldn’t it be cool in your fantasy football league to do the same? To take some late-round player while everyone else points, laughs at and teases you … only to get the real laugh in the end? Welcome to the world of sleepers/value players.

We’ve published more than 100 pages of exclusive fantasy football advice, strategies, rankings and … sleepers.

While there may be plenty of question about what constitutes a true “sleeper,” the common consensus is that fantasy football success is tied directly to finding good value players via your draft, trades, waiver wire moves, etc.

So, as one last series to assist our faithful readers, we polled some of our writers, asking them to give us their favorite sleeper at each position and a paragraph each explaining why. Below, we share our favorite tight end sleepers.

jzak: John Carlson

Tabbed Carlson as a super early sleeper a while ago. Basically non-existent in the preseason, many fantasy owners became nervous about Carlson’s place in the offense. I’d like to suggest that Carlson was the only piece of the offense that was a known quantity, and the Seahawks had a lot of other areas to focus on before cut-down day. Carlson had a breakout campaign two seasons ago, but was relegated to blocking duties last year when Seattle’s offense became a slab of swiss cheese, and many were disappointed in his overall numbers. However, look closely at his stats from 2009. He still averaged more than 11 yards per catch, and actually caught two more TDs than in 2008. Imagine what he can do this year now that other pieces will be handling the bulk of the blocking. Matt Hasselback has been consistently saying that Carlson will be the team’s breakout player this year, and considering the Seahawks currently are relying on ex-bust Mike Williams, Deion “older than dirt” Branch and Deon Butler as their main receiving options, there is good reason to expect a large uptick in fantasy production.

krause:* Zach Miller

Miller posted career highs last year in receptions (66), yards (855), and TDs (3). Did I forget to mention that was with Jamarcus Russell at the helm? Welcome Jason Campbell! Campbell loves his TEs and will be looking for Miller often. Miller has the potential to post top five TE numbers in 2010. Don’t be afraid to use him as your number one TE any given week.

jaymo: *Jermaine Gresham

TEs don’t typically break-out in their rookie year, but Gresham looks to get plenty of targets this season. His blocking will be a concern, but there doesn’t appear to be stiff competition for playing time. So far this pre-season, Carson Palmer has made an effort to work Gresham into the game. With the tandem of WRs the Bengals have, Gresham should have plenty of room to work the middle and underneath zone defenses.

Eric: Tony Scheffler

There wasn’t even a question which player I was going to put here. I’m targeting him at the end of every draft like I targeted Brent Celek last season. He won’t be as awesome as Celek was last year, but he’ll be far more valuable than his last-TE-taken ADP.

Brohamma: New England Patriots

I know, everyone is on the Miller bandwagon but I’m here to tell you that Rob Gronkowski and Aaron “Don’t call me Keith” Hernandez are going to make a huge splash. The trick is figuring out which one will be the main target. Both are extremely athletic and have very good hands. Couple that with the typical two tightend formation that New England loves and defenses could be in for a horrific time. Tom Brady is so fast on his reads and checkdowns.. who do you cover? Welker across the middle, Moss taking the top off and these two beasts chipping at the line and then catching a 2 yard out. Which side? Right? Left? I don’t think one will be dominant over the other but I do see visions of the old „bread n’ butter” play that Coates used to run while in the red zone. Projection: Deadly

sockonfl: Zach Miller

Miller has put up some decent stats despite having JaMarcus Russell as his QB. Now he gets Jason Campbell, who isn’t a superstar but is at least an average QB that has a penchant for making his TE a valuable fantasy option (see Chris Cooley stats with Campbell under center).

Consigliere: Tony Scheffler

Yeah I know Detroit fan with two Lions sleepers, but I couldn’t resist. Scheffler is one year removed from a 90 catch season and is in an offense that uses the tight end a ton. He can also be put out as a wide receiver. He has great hands and is a huge miss match for any line backer or safety. I think he can be had late and would be a good choice if you failed to get a top tight end.

Want to play fantasy football with us? Can you pick the best players each week? Read this

We’re going to run our own free fantasy football game here at Chinstrap Ninjas this year and we’re inviting all of you to play along.

The game will be “hosted” here on the site and will be run through the comments section and a spreadsheet. It’s going to be simple, but hardcore and you will get rewarded for your effort.First let’s discuss rosters.

Rosters

Each owner gets to pick four players per week: one quarterback, one running back, one wide receiver and one tight end.

You may pick the same players every week and every player in the NFL universe is eligible.

Now for the interesting part.

Scoring

Only the highest scoring fantasy player at each position in standard leagues can score for your team. Simply put, if Drew Brees outscores Aaron Rodgers by 0.1 point to be the best fantasy quarterback for that given week, Brees is money, Rodgers is worthless.

Each correct pick is worth five points. So, in the above scenario any player who chose Brees would get five points added to their week and season total. Anybody who picked any other quarterback would get zero points from the position.

Multiple correct picks in a given week earns you a bonus. For each correct pick, five bonus points are added. Here’s a breakdown:

Each correct pick at QB, RB, WR, TE = 5 points

If you get two correct: 5 points + 5 points (the two positions) + 5 bonus points = 15 points

If you get three correct: 5+5+5 (three positions) + 10 bonus points = 25 points

If you get all four correct: 5+5+5+5 (four positions) + 15 bonus points = 35 points

Players will be ranked based on standard scoring rules: Non-PPR, passing TDs are worth 4 points, all other offensive TDs are worth six points, 1 point for every 25 yards passing, 1 point for 10 yards rushing/receiving. Turnovers (interceptions and fumbles lost) are -2.

Picking the top players in the NFL is important, but this format is affected considerably by matchups and luck. For reference:

13 different quarterbacks were No. 1 over the course of 17 weeks last season and would have scored five or more points. The list includes Matthew Stafford, David Garrard and Matt Ryan.

No quarterback had more than two finishes as the No. 1 quarterback in 17 weeks.

Philip Rivers, despite 28 TD passes and more than 4,200 yards passing, would not have scored a single point for teams in this scoring system.

12 different running backs would have scored five points in this format last year, including Jerome Harrison, Justin Forsett, Ricky Williams and Ahmad Bradshaw.

As mercurial as Chris Johnson was last season, he was the highest scoring running back in only 4-of-17 weeks. Besides Johnson, only Jonathan Stewart and Maurice Jones-Drew finished at the top more than once.

As all of these facts point out, it will be difficult to score points, but anyone who scores multiple hits in a given week will be able to A) catch up fast or B) pull away from the pack quickly.

Prizes

The player with the best cumulative total at the end of the season will get special recognition on the site. There could be recognition for other things as well. We’re not going to reveal everything, but understand that visitors to the site will know that brave Ninja Warriors battled valiantly and some emerged victorious.

Let’s start

Let’s get started for Week 1. Can you pick this week’s best fantasy quarterback, running back, receiver and tight end? Post it in the comments below.

Rosters for week 1 must be submitted no later than 12:30 p.m. on Sunday. Minnesota and New Orleans play at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Rosters submitted after the start of that game cannot include players from that game.
Juan Uribe hit the latest stunning homer off of Jonathan Broxton on Saturday night, taking Los Angeles' embattled stopper deep for a two-run shot in the ninth, leading San Francisco to a 5-4 win on the road.

Our View
The bomb completed a stirring comeback for the Giants, who trailed 4-0 going into the seventh. Every time you write Uribe off, expect him to do something like this.

The News
Mitch Talbot allowed just five hits and one run (zero earned) in 6.2 innings of work on Saturday night, picking up his ninth victory of the season in Cleveland's 4-2 win over the Mariners. He struck out six and walked one.

Our View
A great night for Talbot, who hasn't had many lately. He'll draw a much tougher assignment his next time out, when he'll take on the Twins in Minnesota. Don't expect a repeat of tonight.
The News
Shin-Soo Choo went 2-for-3 with an RBI, run scored and stolen base in Cleveland's 4-2 win over the Mariners on Saturday.

Our View
A typically strong all-around effort from Choo, who has to be one of the most underrated players in baseball at this point. Through 119 games, he has 66 runs, 69 RBI and 17 stolen bases.

Waiver Wire: September 4th

Jordan Zimmermann, Nationals (Owned in 5% of Yahoo leagues)

Nationals fans giddily awaited a Stephen Strasburg/Zimmermann combo, giving the moribund franchise a pair of premium power pitchers at the top of the rotation. But alas, as Zimmermann’s Tommy John scars gave way to scoreless starts in the minors, Strasburg’s elbow gave out.

While the news of Strasburg’s injury is bitterly disappointing, Zimmermann is talented in his own right. Washington’s second-round pick in the ’07 draft was extremely impressive during his big league debut last season, with 9.07 K/9, 2.86 BB/9 and a 3.39 xFIP in 91.1 innings pitched. With a fastball averaging a hair over 93 MPH, a mid-80′s slider, a high-70′s curve and a mid-80′s change, Zimmermann leaped ahead in the count (65.2 first pitch strike%, 58% MLB average) and got a good number of swinging strikes (9%, 8.6% MLB average).

On the rehab trail, Zimmermann had a 31/6 K/BB ratio in 39.2 IP spread across four levels. And while two big league starts doesn’t tell us much, he has a 13/1 K/BB ratio in 10 innings pitched. Zimmermann has averaged a little more than 92 MPH with his heater. He’s no Strasburg, but he’s well worth snagging in fantasy leagues.

Neil Walker, Pirates (32%)

Since the Pirates made him the 11th overall pick in the 2004 draft, Walker’s status within the organization has waxed and waned. The switch-hitter from nearby Pine Richland High School has gone from highly-touted catching prospect, to third baseman of the future to an afterthought utility man. But now, in the midst of an excellent 2010 season, Walker’s looking like the Pirates’ long-term answer at second base.

Recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis after raking to the tune of .321/.392/.560 in 189 plate appearances, Walker has posted +11.5 Park-Adjusted Batting Runs in three-plus months in the majors. Turning 25 this coming Friday, Walker is batting .310/.354/.486 in 346 PA, good for a .362 wOBA. Adjusting for park and league factors, Walker’s wOBA is 27 percent above average (127 wRC+). Even better for fantasy owners, Walker still qualifies at the hot corner as well.

Granted, Walker hasn’t drawn many walks (5.8 BB%), and his batting average on balls in play is very high at .367. But ZiPS still projects him as an above-average hitter moving forward, with a .280/.321/.453 triple-slash and a .332 wOBA.

The biggest question he’ll have to answer is, can he cut it at second base? We just don’t know the answer yet. Six-hundred-some innings isn’t near enough of a sample to make an informed judgment, however bad his UZR marks might be. Sean Smith‘s Total Zone rated Walker as somewhat below-average at third base in the minors, and figures he’ll cost his club more than a half-win with the glove at second. Expect Pittsburgh to give Walker every chance to make the transition, though.
